PM Modi arrives in Bratislava, says "visit will deepen bilateral ties, open new avenues of cooperation"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bratislava on Monday for a historic state visit to Slovakia, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited the Central European nation since its independence in 1993. The visit signifies a commitment to strengthening India-Slovakia relations and broadening cooperation across various sectors.

Upon arrival, Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism about the visit's potential to deepen bilateral ties and open new avenues for collaboration. He conveyed his anticipation for productive meetings with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. The Prime Minister was warmly welcomed with cultural performances, including renditions of the national song "Vande Mataram" and the Indian national anthem by the Lucnica Ensemble, as well as a spiritual performance by the Mahadeva Kirtan Projekt and a traditional Slovak dance by the Kopaniciarik folk ensemble.

Modi also received a traditional Slovak welcome of bread and salt, a symbol of hospitality and goodwill deeply rooted in Slavic traditions. Members of the Indian diaspora in Bratislava gathered in large numbers to greet the Prime Minister, underscoring the growing engagement between the Indian community and Slovakia.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Prime Minister Fico, follows a period of increasing momentum in India-Slovakia relations. High-level exchanges have included President Droupadi Murmu's visit to Slovakia in April 2025 and President Pellegrini's participation in India's AI Impact Summit in February. Discussions during Modi's stay are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, innovation, manufacturing, and other strategic areas, reaffirming India's commitment to its partnership with Slovakia.
