PM orders maximum vigilance to protect lives, property from waterlogging

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed all relevant agencies and field administration to operate with heightened vigilance and coordination to safeguard people's lives and property amidst severe waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall. The directives, issued during a virtual meeting, emphasized the swift delivery of relief and medical services.

Protecting people's lives and property must remain the administration's top priority during the disaster.

Officials briefed the prime minister on the current waterlogging situation, damage extent, shelter conditions, and rescue operations in their respective areas. Rahman stressed that protecting lives and property is the administration's foremost priority during the disaster. He mandated the prompt distribution of essential supplies, including dry food, safe drinking water, baby food, and medicines.

The prime minister also highlighted the need for safe sanitation, electricity, and communication facilities at shelters. He specifically instructed authorities to ensure the healthcare and safety of vulnerable populations: women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women. Law enforcement agencies were also put on maximum alert to prevent theft, hoarding, and misappropriation of relief goods.

While waterlogging in Chattogram was reportedly easing, the Sylhet region faced a deteriorating situation due to an embankment breach, and Rangpur Division was at risk of further waterlogging. Rahman urged all authorities to prepare for potential risks, maintain adequate personnel and equipment, and work collaboratively to support affected populations.

No unscrupulous group should be allowed to exploit the disaster by engaging in theft, robbery, hoarding, misappropriation of relief or other criminal activities.
