PM orders stronger nationwide dengue prevention campaigns

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered authorities to intensify cleanliness drives and public awareness campaigns across Bangladesh as part of efforts to prevent dengue from spreading.

At a meeting on the dengue situation at the Secretariat, he said prevention could not rely on government agencies alone. Authorities should involve people in keeping homes and surrounding areas clean, removing stagnant water, disposing of waste properly and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds.

Tarique directed officials to bring Disaster Management volunteers, Bangladesh National Cadet Corps members, Rover Scouts and Red Crescent members into the effort. He called for local cleanliness campaigns organised through these groups and involving residents.

The meeting also examined measures to expand treatment facilities and improve patient management at upazila-level hospitals. Officials discussed supplying mosquito nets to dengue patients in hospitals to reduce the risk of mosquitoes transmitting the disease after biting infected patients.

The prime minister stressed that the decisions had to produce visible action. “There must be a reflection of this on the ground,” Tarique said. He also told the relevant authorities to coordinate their work, saying prevention should receive the highest priority in tackling dengue.

LGRD Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, Health and Family Welfare State Minister MA Muhith, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Health SM Ziauddin Haider, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam and senior officials from relevant ministries and departments attended the meeting.
