PM Shehbaz calls on Iran, other parties not to jeopardise ‘hard-earned peace gains’

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for calm and restraint from Iran and all other parties involved in the escalating Middle East conflict, warning against jeopardizing the "hard-earned peace gains" of recent months.

Sharif voiced "deep concern" over the heightened hostilities during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. He stressed the "urgent need to restore regional peace and stability." The prime minister urged all parties to refrain from actions that could undermine the fragile peace achieved. This appeal follows a series of Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, leading to retaliatory attacks by Iran on Gulf countries.

Reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to regional peace, Sharif assured Pezeshkian that Islamabad is ready to continue playing an "honest and sincere role" in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran. He also highlighted the importance of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a framework for mutual understanding and shared prosperity.

Iranian President Pezeshkian thanked Sharif and other Pakistani leaders for attending the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Both leaders agreed to expedite follow-up actions on decisions made during Pezeshkian's recent visit to Islamabad and to maintain close contact on matters of mutual interest.
