PNP outlines priorities ahead of 88th conference

Jamaica’s People’s National Party is putting back-to-school preparations, the rising cost of living, drought and poor infrastructure at the center of its work ahead of its 88th Anniversary Conference.

The PNP parliamentary group met for two days to assess challenges facing Jamaicans, according to a statement issued Monday. It also identified the Government’s response to Hurricane Melissa as an urgent issue. Elected representatives and party workers have been assigned to carry out a programme prepared by the party Secretariat and approved by the National Executive Council.

The group, led by Opposition Leader Mark Golding, reaffirmed its commitment to the party’s constitution and democratic processes. Its political work will include preparations for the impending Local Government Election and efforts to strengthen the PNP’s representation in Parliament.

Members of Parliament and party workers across the island are now tasked with driving forward the work programme set by the Secretariat and endorsed by the National Executive Council

Opposition spokesman on Parliamentary Business Phillip Paulwell said the party’s task was to turn concerns raised in communities into organized representation. “This is about translating the concerns raised on the ground, whether it is getting children back to school, the price of a market basket or the state of a rural road, into consistent, organised representation,” he said.

Paulwell also said the parliamentary group and party workers would drive forward the programme endorsed by the National Executive Council. The group described its goal as “building a better Jamaica that puts people first” and stressed the need for a strong and unified party.
