Poetry Meets Management: New Book 'The Encounter of Poetry and Discourse' Released

A unique collaboration between poetry and management theory has resulted in a new book, 'The Encounter of Poetry and Discourse,' co-authored by poet Han Ji-hye and Kim Woo-il, former head of Daewoo Group's restructuring division and former CEO of Daewoo M&A.

The book presents a distinctive structure, alternating between 50 evocative poems and 50 pragmatic discussions on life and management. Poet Han Ji-hye uses emotional language to pose questions, while Kim Woo-il, drawing from his extensive business experience, responds with realistic discourse on organizations, society, and human nature. This fusion of abstract lyricism and practical corporate philosophy offers a multifaceted reflection on history, life, and leadership.

The authors' collaboration began in 2001, sparked by a shared connection at the funeral of the late Minister Shin Jik-soo. Kim Woo-il was particularly struck by the philosophical depth and symbolism in Han's poetry, proposing a combination of her work with his own management insights.

'The Encounter of Poetry and Discourse' delves into themes that resonate with modern Korean society, including personal life choices, organizational dynamics, the historical struggles of Korean independence movements, the pain of separated families, and the values of patriotism and sacrifice. The book notably addresses the sorrow of divided families, drawing on the authors' connection with the late singer Hyun Mee.

Literary critic Yoo Hyun-jong praised the work as a "form that offers deep resonance through the combination of lyrical and epic poetry," adding that it "embraces the pain of the era and encourages reflection on life, which is the foundation of literature." The authors expressed their hope that the book will serve as an opportunity to connect literature with management, and history with life, especially in a rapidly changing world that demands introspection and balanced perspectives. A portion of the book's sales will be donated to support the families of independence patriots facing financial difficulties.
