Poland receives latest batch of 28 South Korean K2 tanks to bolster army

Poland continues its significant military buildup with the arrival of the latest batch of 28 South Korean-made K2 'Black Panther' main battle tanks. These new additions are slated for deployment with the 16th Mechanized Division, further strengthening Poland's armored forces in response to perceived threats from Russia.

The delivery is part of a substantial contract signed in August 2025 with South Korea's Hyundai Rotem, which includes a total of 180 K2 tanks. The agreement specifies the delivery of 116 K2GF (Gap Filler) tanks between 2026 and 2027, followed by 64 K2PL variants, customized for Polish requirements, from 2028 to 2030. Notably, 61 of these K2PL tanks will be assembled in Poland at the Bumar-Łabędy factory, facilitating local component integration and technology transfer.

This latest acquisition is a key component of Poland's ambitious defense strategy. The nation aims to assemble a formidable force of approximately 900 main battle tanks by 2030, incorporating the K2 tanks alongside American M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams and German Leopard 2 tanks. This expansion is intended to significantly enhance the ground deterrence capabilities along NATO's eastern flank.

Previously, Poland had already received 180 K2GF tanks under an initial contract, with the 16th Pomeranian Mechanized Division being a primary recipient. Units such as the 20th Mechanized Brigade and the 9th Armored Cavalry Brigade have already been equipped with the K2 tanks. The second contract also encompasses support vehicles, including combat engineering vehicles, armored bridgelayers, and armored recovery vehicles, along with ammunition, training, and logistical support.
