Poland Rises to Sixth-Largest Economy in EU, Surpassing Belgium and Sweden

Poland has solidified its position as a major economic power in Central and Eastern Europe, climbing to become the sixth-largest economy within the European Union. According to the latest data from Eurostat, Poland's nominal GDP reached 922.9 billion euros in 2025, representing 4.9% of the EU's total economic output. This significant achievement places Poland ahead of countries like Belgium and Sweden.

Germany continues to lead the EU's economic landscape, boasting a nominal GDP of 4.47 trillion euros, which constitutes nearly a quarter of the bloc's total economy. France follows as the second-largest economy, with Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands rounding out the top five. Poland's ascent to the sixth position underscores its growing economic influence and stability within the Union.

The overall economy of the European Union was valued at 18.8 trillion euros in 2025. Within this framework, Romania holds the 12th position among EU economies, with an estimated nominal GDP of 380.1 billion euros. While Romania's economy is the second largest in the Central and Eastern European region, it is less than half the size of Poland's economic output.

Looking ahead, Poland's economic trajectory is projected to continue its upward trend. A report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggests that Poland could potentially enter the top 20 largest economies globally by 2028, possibly surpassing Switzerland. This forecast highlights Poland's sustained economic development and its increasing importance on the world stage.
