Poland thwarts Russian plot to kill US citizen on NATO soil

Poland has successfully thwarted a Russian plot to assassinate a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw, a move Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described as unprecedented. This marks the first time in decades a Western leader has publicly accused Moscow of plotting to kill a U.S. citizen on the territory of another NATO country.

Speaking to journalists, Tusk revealed that the suspect, allegedly recruited by Russia's secret services, was arrested on August 7. "He was inconvenient from the point of view of the Putin regime, and at the last moment... we managed to prevent this execution," Tusk said. He emphasized that this was the first instance of someone acting on Russian orders targeting an American citizen within a NATO member state.

Prime Minister Tusk further elaborated that the targeted individual "was uncomfortable for the Putin regime," adding, "We have to accept the assumption that the Putin regime will try to eliminate people who are inconvenient for various reasons." The operation to disrupt the plot was conducted in collaboration with U.S. intelligence services, according to Tomasz Siemoniak, Poland's minister overseeing intelligence services. The victim was identified as a U.S. citizen "of Ukrainian origin."

This is the first situation of its kind in which someone, acting on Russian orders, decided to carry out an attack against an American citizen on the territory of another NATO country.

This incident occurs amid broader accusations that Russia has intensified its campaign of targeted killings since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Western officials suggest Russia is increasingly targeting Russian activists, foreign supporters of Ukraine, and military defectors. Intelligence agencies believe these actions are part of Russia's strategy to undermine European nations supporting Ukraine. The Associated Press has documented approximately 200 incidents of sabotage, arson, and disruption across Europe since the war began, which officials have linked to Russia.

Past incidents include the 2006 poisoning of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko in London with radioactive polonium and the 2018 attempted poisoning of former Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal in Salisbury using the nerve agent Novichok. Russia has consistently denied involvement in such activities, with President Putin stating in May that Russia is not waging a sabotage campaign against Europe.
