Police arrest 345 suspected thugs, drug peddlers, others in Kano

Authorities in Kano State have apprehended 345 individuals suspected of various criminal activities, including thuggery, drug trafficking, and possession of offensive weapons.

I have convened this briefing to update the people of Kano State on the current security situation, to present the results of our recent statewide operation, and to reaffirm the command’s commitment to consolidating the gains we are recording.

The Kano State Police Command conducted a coordinated, three-day clearance operation across all 44 local government areas. Police Commissioner Ibrahim Bakori announced the figures during a press conference, detailing the operation's success in dismantling criminal networks and disrupting drug supply chains. The objective was to enhance security and address the prevalence of illegal arms and narcotics.

During the sweep, law enforcement seized over 270 dangerous weapons, such as knives, cutlasses, and clubs. Additionally, a substantial amount of illicit substances, including Cannabis Sativa, Exol tablets, and a locally known mixture called "Suck and Die," were confiscated. Bakori stated that these seizures directly reduce the capacity of criminal groups to threaten law-abiding citizens and destabilize communities.

During the operations, a total of 345 suspects were taken into custody, including suspected thugs, drug peddlers, and persons found with offensive weapons. All the suspects are undergoing investigation and will be prosecuted where evidence warrants.

The Police Command emphasized its commitment to maintaining pressure on criminal elements through continuous raids, intelligence gathering, and prosecution. The recently launched Violent Crime Response Unit has reportedly improved tactical responses to armed violence and gang activity, enhancing the command's ability to act swiftly on actionable intelligence. The operation, referred to as "kukan kura," aims to increase police visibility, reduce response times, and deny criminals operational space.
