Police arrest 89 over number plate violations in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 89 drivers for failing to comply with the Inspector-General of Police's directive against vehicles operating without, or with obscured, registration number plates. Authorities stated that such violations pose a significant threat to both local and national security, hindering efforts to track vehicles used in criminal activities.

Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi announced that appropriate legal actions, including potential prosecution, have been initiated against the offenders. He described the enforcement as a strategic preventive policing initiative aimed at improving vehicle traceability, bolstering intelligence gathering, and supporting investigations. The exercise, he assured, will continue across the state to ensure all violators are dealt with according to the law.

During the operations, 89 vehicles and their drivers were apprehended for violating the directive. Appropriate administrative and legal actions have been taken against the offenders in accordance with extant laws and established procedures, including prosecution where applicable.

In addition to the number plate violations, the command reported successes in combating armed robbery. Operatives foiled a robbery attempt in Akuro Phase I, Ogere Remo, leading to the arrest of one suspect, Abdulsalam Adam, and the recovery of two abandoned motorcycles. Efforts are underway to apprehend other fleeing gang members.

Further demonstrating their commitment to security, police in Ajuwon Division responded to a distress call on July 2, 2026, apprehending suspects involved in a home invasion. The robbers had stolen mobile phones, jewelry, and a laptop before being intercepted. The investigation into this incident is ongoing, with efforts focused on recovering the stolen items and apprehending all involved parties.
