Police arrest four officers over alleged extortion in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers implicated in a viral video depicting unprofessional conduct during a stop-and-search operation. The incident occurred along the Lagos-Benin Expressway, and the officers were seen allegedly engaging in extortion.

Abayomi Jimoh, the command's spokesperson, identified the arrested officers as Inspectors Elomore Sodayo, Adefila Adewale, Olorunfemi Opeyemi, and Odusola Peter. In the video, one officer is seen asking a driver to "do something better" after reviewing his vehicle documents, which were found to be up to date. When the driver stated he had no money, his license was seized, and he was instructed to park his vehicle for further checks.

The situation escalated when a plain-clothed policeman, a passenger in the vehicle, attempted to intervene, leading to an argument. The command has initiated a comprehensive investigation, ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, to determine the extent of each officer's culpability.

The Command wishes to inform the general public that the officers captured in the video have been arrested and identified as AP/No. 207454 ASP Elomore Sodayo, AP/No. 332012 Inspector Adefila Adewale, AP/No. 332449 Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi, and AP/No. 332369 Inspector Odusola Peter.

Jimoh emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution that does not tolerate misconduct. He stated that officers are expected to act with professionalism and respect for human dignity, adhering strictly to the Code of Conduct. The command assures the public that the investigation will be transparent and accountable, and any officer found to have violated the force's ethics will face disciplinary action.

This action follows a previous incident in September last year where eight officers were sanctioned for professional misconduct.
