Police arrest robbery, cult suspect in Enugu, recover fake gun, others

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 28-year-old man, Osani Joseph, on suspicion of armed robbery and cultism. The arrest occurred during an intelligence-led operation at a criminal hideout in the New Artisan area of Enugu metropolis.

During the raid, which took place on May 26, police recovered several items from Joseph, including a silver-colored imitation handgun, a dagger, ten wraps of a substance believed to be methamphetamine (Mkpuru Mmiri), and a sachet containing a substance suspected to be cannabis. The suspect, a resident of Premier Layout, Enugu, was apprehended by the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

During a search conducted on the suspect, operatives recovered one silver-coloured gun-like object allegedly used by the suspect to rob unsuspecting members of the public, one dagger, ten wraps of substance suspected to be methamphetamine, and one sachet containing substance suspected to be Cannabis sativa.

According to SP Daniel Ndukwe, the command's spokesperson, Joseph allegedly confessed to using the fake gun to rob unsuspecting members of the public. He also admitted to being a member of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity. The police are continuing their investigations to identify and apprehend other members of his alleged criminal network.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the command's commitment to combating crime and criminality. He urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and supportive of the police by providing timely and credible information.
