Police arrest suspect over Osun NURTW clash, three officers injured

A violent clash between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Osogbo has led to the arrest of one suspect by the Osun State Police Command. Three security operatives sustained gunshot injuries during the incident on July 20.

It could be recalled that on 20th July, 2026, a protest was carried out by a faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Osun State that their vehicles were not allowed into the garage by the dominant faction, which reportedly escalated into clashes involving another faction of the union in Osogbo, and the Osun State Police Command responded swiftly and restored normalcy.

Police Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan stated that the clash escalated when armed hoodlums invaded the Oke-Ijetu area after a protest by one NURTW faction alleging obstruction from accessing a motor park. Operatives responded to a distress call and engaged the hoodlums, resulting in the injuries to the security personnel.

But at about 5:30pm of the same date, a distress call was received by the Command that there was a group of hoodlums shooting sporadically at Oke-Ijetu Area, Osogbo.

During the exchange of gunfire, Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi, 40, was arrested. He confessed to being informed by an individual named Sibi, who received instructions from "Wakili Alowonle," to meet at the scene. Saheed also admitted to receiving a pump-action gun from Sibi. He is cooperating with police in the search for other individuals involved.

On getting to the scene, the hoodlums, suspected to be faction of one Wakili Alowonle, started shooting at the police operatives where three security operatives sustained various degree of gunshot injury and are responding to treatment at the hospital.

The police recovered six expended cartridges, four vehicles, four motorcycles, military camouflage, and suspected charms from the suspects. In a separate operation, three suspected motorcycle robbers were also arrested.

During the encounter, the operatives professionally arrested one suspect, Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi, who confessed that he was informed by Sibi that he received a call from Alowonle that they should meet at Oke-Ijetu Area, Osogbo.
