Police arrest suspected impersonator, recover security uniforms

Authorities in Nigeria's Akwa Ibom State have apprehended a man suspected of impersonating a police inspector. The arrest occurred during a routine stop-and-search operation in Uyo, where officers intercepted the suspect, identified as Precious Joseph, riding an unregistered motorcycle.

According to police spokeswoman Timfon John, Joseph initially presented himself as a police inspector and produced a warrant card bearing the name "Inspector Daniel." However, his suspicious demeanor prompted a more thorough search. This search uncovered an official identity card belonging to the Nigerian Correctional Service, further fueling suspicions of fraudulent impersonation of security personnel.

Following the initial arrest, detectives obtained a warrant to search Joseph's residence in Ikot Ekpene. The search yielded a significant cache of items, including a police beret, police buttons and insignia, inspector rank badges, Police Mobile Force uniforms, a military camouflage sweater, a lawyer's wig, and two pairs of desert boots. Police believe these items were used in his alleged impersonations.

Joseph remains in custody as investigators work to uncover the source of the recovered items and identify any potential accomplices. Authorities are also probing whether he has been involved in other criminal activities within or outside the state. The police have issued a warning against the unlawful possession or use of security uniforms and insignia, emphasizing that such acts are punishable offenses. Residents are urged to report any suspicious individuals falsely presenting themselves as security personnel.
