Police Arrest Suspects in Deadly Plateau Community Attack, Governor Vows Justice

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has announced that police have apprehended individuals involved in a recent deadly attack on Bin Mper Community in Mangu Local Government Area. The governor visited the community on Thursday to offer condolences following the August 18, 2026 attack, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

Mutfwang condemned the incident as barbaric and senseless, stating it was not only an assault on the community but also a direct challenge to his administration's commitment to safeguarding lives and property. "This is not an attack on the community alone; it is an attack on me," he declared. He assured residents that the government would pursue the arrests to their conclusion and collaborate with security agencies to ensure those responsible face justice.

The police have said that some persons have been arrested, and we will follow the matter to its logical conclusion.

The governor also pledged to enhance existing security arrangements and implement new measures to protect vulnerable settlements. He noted that the attack occurred shortly after a security review involving state officials and military commanders. Mutfwang vowed to protect residents on their ancestral lands, stating, "We will do everything within our powers to ensure that you remain on your land. Nobody will take over your land."

He extended sympathies to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Mutfwang commended Plateau youths for their support in community security efforts and urged them to remain peaceful and vigilant. He stressed that overcoming banditry and terrorism requires a unified approach involving communities, traditional institutions, government, and security forces, advocating for proactive, intelligence-led operations to prevent attacks.

The governor also met with the Mishkagham Mwaghavul, Da John Putmang Hirse, to express his condolences. Hirse described the attack as deliberate and senseless, noting that residents were killed while sleeping. He affirmed the Mwaghavul people's commitment to peace and their ancestral land despite attempts at intimidation. Grace Joseph Gora, President of the Mwaghavul Development Association Women’s Wing, also denounced the killings and appealed for calm among women.
