Police confirm abduction of corps members, rescue 11 in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were traveling from Bayelsa State to Abuja. The incident occurred last Wednesday along the Aloma–Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area when armed individuals emerged from the bush, blocking two buses.

At about 1640hrs, armed hoodlums emerged from the bush around Ogene Zaria, near the Ogene Zaria/Onicha-Igo Junction, blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions and abducted some passengers, while others escaped into the surrounding bush.

Following a distress call, a joint security team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Ofu, launched a coordinated operation. They recovered two abandoned vehicles, a Peace Mass Transit bus and an 18-seater bus. The bush-combing and rescue operation successfully freed 11 abducted passengers, including the drivers of both vehicles. Preliminary reports indicate that most of the rescued individuals were NYSC members.

Preliminary debriefing indicates that most of the rescued victims are NYSC members travelling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.

The rescued victims have been debriefed and allowed to continue their journey. However, the police confirmed that joint security operations are still ongoing in the surrounding forest. The primary objectives are to rescue any remaining victims, apprehend the perpetrators, and bring them to justice. The command assures the public that all available resources are being deployed to secure the area and ensure the safe recovery of everyone still missing.
