Police foil bomb plot in Ondo, arrest 16 suspects

Ondo State has witnessed a significant security operation as the State Police Command announced the arrest of 16 individuals involved in serious criminal activities. The breakthrough operation successfully foiled a planned bomb attack on government facilities in the state capital, Akure, leading to the apprehension of six suspects allegedly involved in the plot. The command recorded a major operational breakthrough with the successful foiling of a planned bomb attack in Akure. The operation led to the arrest of six suspects and the recovery of materials suspected to be components for the fabrication of improvised explosive devices, alongside several other incriminating items on April 15, 2026.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, detailed the operation, revealing that the suspects were arrested following intelligence on a cross-state criminal syndicate. The raid on their rented apartment in Akure uncovered a cache of materials suspected to be components for improvised explosive devices, along with other incriminating items. The recovery of items such as bottles, chemicals, suspected charms, cash, electronic devices, and motorcycles points to a well-organized operation.

Acting on the intelligence, operatives were deployed to the identified location, where the suspects were apprehended before they could execute their plan. A search of the scene and subsequent operation at their apartment led to the recovery of several items.

Beyond the foiled bomb plot, the police also apprehended 10 other individuals for their involvement in cult-related activities, further underscoring the command's commitment to tackling crime across the state. Preliminary investigations into the bomb plot suggest a premeditated plan targeting government infrastructure, with a document detailing potential targets reportedly recovered.
