Police intercept Oyo-bound Indian hemp, arrest three

A broken-down vehicle on the Moro-Ife Road led Osun police to a suspected Indian hemp shipment and the arrest of three men.

Police said officers from the Violence Crime Response Unit’s Team E were on routine patrol when they noticed a silver Toyota Sienna Space Bus abandoned by the roadside. A man identified as 38-year-old Awo Omotayo later arrived with a Nissan Cabstar driven by 22-year-old Abayomi Suleiman, accompanied by Oluwatayo Samuel, to tow the vehicle.

A search of the Sienna uncovered bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp. Police arrested the three men and recovered the suspected drugs and the vehicles for investigation.

According to police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, Omotayo told investigators that a man known as Baba Ibo, who operates around Garage Olode in Osun State, had engaged him to transport the substance to Ogbomoso. Baba Ibo allegedly held the contact details of the intended recipient.

Osun Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura ordered a thorough investigation into the source and destination of the suspected illicit substance. Police said efforts continued to arrest Baba Ibo and anyone else connected with the case, and urged residents to provide information about fleeing suspects.

On 30th August 2026, at about 1330hrs, a team of Police operatives from the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) Team E while on routine patrol along the Moro, Ife Road, came across a silver-coloured Toyota Sienna Space Bus with registration number BGT 81 OLG which had broken down and was abandoned by the roadside.
