Police investigate another substation alarm in Osnabrück

Another alarm at an electrical substation in Germany ended without a danger to the public, but police are still checking whether a crime took place.

Construction workers found a damaged fence at the substation in Osnabrück on Friday morning and alerted emergency services. Police searched the site with a helicopter, service dogs and a drone.

The suspicious object found there turned out to be a harmless pipe. Police said the facility was empty and that "there was no danger to the population at any time."

Investigators are nevertheless examining whether the damaged fence resulted from a criminal act. The incident follows repeated alarms since the start of the week over actual or suspected sabotage attempts at substations in Germany. In Lower Saxony, an open electrical cabinet at a substation in Ganderkesee, in the Oldenburg district, recently prompted another major emergency response.
