Police investigate Kim Byung-ki's alleged anonymous donations; decision expected after local elections

South Korean police are expanding their investigation into independent lawmaker Kim Byung-ki, who has been under scrutiny for nine months regarding 13 alleged offenses, including accepting political funds for nominations and seeking favors for his second son's employment. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crime Investigation Division has now uncovered suspicions of anonymous campaign donations.

Investigators have summoned and questioned former Kim campaign donors and individuals involved in managing his funds during April and May. These individuals were reported in January for alleged violations of the Political Funds Act, accused of making anonymous donations as a quid pro quo for nominations or knowingly assisting in the processing of such funds.

The police are examining whether Kim directed or was involved in these anonymous donations as part of the existing 13 allegations. Previously, Kim was questioned seven times by police regarding his alleged involvement in illegal political activities within his constituency in Dongjak District, Seoul, between 2017 and 2021.

Given the ongoing nature of the investigation and the police's continued examination of some charges, a decision on Kim Byung-ki's case is likely to be made after the upcoming June 3 local elections. The police are reportedly focusing on the details of the alleged anonymous donations and Kim's potential role in them.
