Police Investigate Network Illegally Leaking Accident Victim Data to Law Firm

Romanian authorities have carried out 11 searches in Bucharest and Ilfov county as part of an investigation into a suspected network illegally obtaining and using accident victim data. The Economic Crime Investigation Directorate of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police is leading the operation, which targets alleged tax evasion and illegal access to confidential information. Investigators suspect that medical personnel, including nurses and orderlies, along with a police officer, divulged personal and medical details of road accident victims to individuals seeking to recruit them as clients for a law firm. According to the police, this information was then used to approach victims or their families with offers of legal assistance for compensation claims. Initially, the offered legal fees appeared low, but subsequent addendums to contracts allegedly allowed the law firm to charge success fees ranging from 25-30% of the recovered damages. Prosecutors are also examining how the funds generated from these contracts were managed, noting that victims were reportedly asked to sign notarized declarations allowing compensation payments to be diverted to legal entities controlled by those involved in the scheme, before being transferred to the beneficiaries.

The illicit activity would have been supported by medical personnel (nurses, orderlies, stretcher bearers) and security guards, employed at various hospital units in Bucharest municipality, and by a police officer, who allegedly disclosed the personal data and health data of victims involved in road accidents, for the purpose of concluding legal assistance contracts.
