Police investigate punch during country football game in WA

An investigation is underway by Western Australia Police following an on-field assault during a country football match. The incident, which occurred on Sunday in Kojonup, saw a player punched in the head and left unconscious.

The game was between the hometown Kojonup Tigers and the Bridgetown Bulldogs in the Lower South West Football League. Footage circulating from the match shows a Bridgetown player running up behind a Kojonup player and delivering a punch to the side of the head. The injured player fell to the ground, while the assailant continued playing.

The victim lost consciousness during the incident and sustained facial injuries.

A spokesperson for WA Police confirmed that the victim, a man in his 20s, was threatened and assaulted during the game. He lost consciousness and suffered facial injuries. The player was taken to Kojonup Hospital for treatment.

The Lower South West Football League acknowledged awareness of the incident. A league spokesperson stated that the matter has been referred to the Country Football WA tribunal process for handling according to its rules. Both the Bridgetown Football Club and the Kojonup Football Club have been approached for comment, with the league emphasizing the need to preserve the integrity of the tribunal process.
