Police kill two bandits in Zamfara, recover explosives

Police in Zamfara State have successfully neutralized two bandits and recovered explosive devices during a security operation in the Bungudu Local Government Area. The incident occurred on May 26, 2026, when armed individuals invaded Funture area of Rugar Buda Village, firing sporadically to instill panic among residents.

On 26th May, 2026, at about 0030hrs, a group of armed hoodlums invaded the Funture area of Rugar Buda Village via Nahuce District in Bungudu Emirate, shooting sporadically in an attempt to cause panic among residents.

Upon receiving the report, police operatives and other security personnel stationed in Nahuce swiftly mobilized and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel. The exchange resulted in the neutralization of two bandits, prompting the remaining criminals to flee into the surrounding forest, likely with gunshot injuries. Regrettably, a vigilante member, identified as Kabiru Auwal, sustained a gunshot injury to his left hand, resulting in a fracture. He is currently receiving medical treatment and responding well.

Upon receipt of the report, Police operatives and other security personnel stationed in Nahuce swiftly mobilised and responded to the scene, where they engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel.

In a related development, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in collaboration with the EOD-CBRN Team, conducted a sweeping operation along the Bilbis–Kuncin Kalgo Road on May 25, 2026. Following a distress call, the team detected a pressure plate Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near Hayin Kagana–Kuncin Kalgo. This device was suspected to have been planted by terrorists to target security personnel and civilians.

Regrettably, a vigilante member identified as Kabiru Auwal, male, 35 years old, of Gwargwabe area, sustained a gunshot injury on his left hand, resulting in a fracture.

EOD-CBRN experts successfully evacuated and neutralized the IED without any casualties. The components were safely demolished according to standard procedures, rendering the area safe for public movement. The Commissioner of Police, Zamfara State Command, CP Ahmad Muhammad Bello, commended the operatives' bravery and professionalism, reassuring the public of the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property. He urged residents to continue providing credible information to support ongoing security operations against criminal elements.

The explosive device was suspected to have been planted by terrorists operating within the area with the intention of targeting security personnel and innocent civilians.
