Police launch manhunt for copper thieves who fled into cornfield

A police operation in Badbergen, Germany, turned into a manhunt after three suspected copper thieves fled from officers and vanished into a dense cornfield. The incident began early Saturday morning when a patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle with unregistered plates. When officers attempted to stop the car, the driver ignored their signals and sped away.

The pursuit was short-lived as the three occupants of the vehicle abandoned the car with its engine still running. They then fled on foot into a nearby cornfield, prompting police to surround the area. A significant police presence, including a K-9 unit, a drone, and a police helicopter, was deployed to search the field.

Despite the extensive search efforts, the trio managed to evade capture. The police investigation into the abandoned vehicle yielded potential evidence, including burglary tools, gloves, ski masks, and copper along with electrical wiring. Authorities believe these items may be stolen goods.

The Osnabrück public prosecutor's office has ordered the vehicle to be seized as evidence. Police are continuing their investigation to identify the three fugitives and determine the origin of the recovered materials. The incident highlights ongoing issues with metal theft and the challenges police face in apprehending suspects who attempt to evade capture in rural environments.
