Police Officer Admits Lying About Call with Missing Person

A police officer in Jeju has admitted that his claim of speaking with a missing 30-something woman was false. Officer Boo, attached to the Jeju Western Police Station, was arrested on August 25 on charges of dereliction of duty, forgery and use of electronic records, and obstruction of official business. He had consistently denied the charges, insisting he had spoken with the missing woman, Ms. Jang.

However, after investigators presented evidence, including mobile phone call records, Officer Boo reportedly changed his statement. Police explained that after receiving Ms. Jang's missing person report on the evening of May 15, Officer Boo falsely concluded the case, stating that he had contacted her and she requested her whereabouts not be disclosed. Crucially, phone records later confirmed by police on August 7 showed no call between Officer Boo and Ms. Jang.

Ms. Jang was found dead on August 24 near her accommodation in Aewol-eup, Jeju City, 104 days after she was reported missing. In a separate case, a 60-year-old man, whose missing person report was also falsely closed by Officer Boo, was found dead 51 days after the report was filed, on August 22.

Authorities are now deploying profilers to investigate Officer Boo's motives and the full circumstances surrounding his actions. The investigation aims to uncover why the officer allegedly fabricated case closures, leading to tragic outcomes for the missing individuals.
