Police officer arrested for fabricating missing person reports; second victim found dead

A police officer in Jeju is under investigation for allegedly fabricating reports and closing missing person cases, leading to tragic outcomes. The officer, identified as Boo, is accused of falsely reporting contact with missing persons, thereby closing their cases prematurely.

In the case of Jang Mi-ran, 37, who has been missing for over 51 days, Officer Boo allegedly claimed to have spoken with her and closed her case. However, investigations revealed no record of such a call. Jang remains missing.

This alleged misconduct is not isolated. The same officer is also implicated in the disappearance of a man in his 60s. His family reported him missing three times, but Officer Boo reportedly closed the case after claiming contact and that the individual did not wish to reveal his location. The man was later found dead 51 days after the initial report.

The Jeju Provincial Police Agency has arrested Officer Boo on charges including dereliction of duty, forgery of electronic records, and obstruction of official business. The family of the 60-year-old man expressed distress, stating they trusted the police's assurance that contact had been made, only for him to be found deceased.
