Police officers face disciplinary action over 'insufficient investigation' in director Kim Chang-min's death case

An investigation into the death of film director Kim Chang-min has led to disciplinary action against six police officers accused of mishandling the case. The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency announced on May 27 that these officers, involved in the initial response and investigation, showed deficiencies in their duties.

Kim Chang-min died in November 2023, more than two weeks after being assaulted in October. The incident occurred while he was dining with his son, who has a developmental disability, at a restaurant in Guri City. He sustained injuries that led to a brain hemorrhage and subsequent brain death. The director was able to donate his organs before passing away.

The controversy arose from the family's strong objections to the police's initial investigation. Police had sought arrest warrants for the suspects twice, first for severe injury and later for assault resulting in death, but both were dismissed by the court. The suspects were consequently sent to the prosecution without detention.

Amid growing public concern and the family's persistent complaints, prosecutors formed a special investigation team. After a supplementary investigation lasting six months, the suspects were finally arrested. The police agency stated that the remaining five officers involved in the case received warnings or cautionary measures.
