Police operation underway at substation in Lower Saxony’s Oldenburg district

Police remained at an electrical substation in Ganderkesee, in Lower Saxony’s Oldenburg district, on Friday morning after an overnight operation began at the site. A helicopter took part in the response for a period, and several patrol cars stood at the access roads.

A police patrol at the substation had made an unspecified discovery, prompting officers to call in additional forces, a police spokeswoman said. She declined to provide further details about the discovery or explain what investigators were seeking.

The spokeswoman said there was no danger to the public. Police have been on alert after attacks on substations in North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg.

The operation followed the discovery of a suspicious object by a walker at a substation in Dormagen, between Cologne and Düsseldorf. Investigators believe the object may have been a launch device and are treating that case as possible sabotage. They also have a letter claiming responsibility that refers to other suspected cases in North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg.
