Police probe death of Kogi teacher assaulted for disciplining pupil

The Kogi State Police Command is investigating the alleged culpable homicide of a primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who died following an assault. The incident occurred in Olamaboro Local Government Area after the teacher disciplined a pupil.

Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 30, for disciplining a pupil.

According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, the case was reported on June 25, 2026. Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 18, 2026, Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly entered Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka. They reportedly assaulted Maryam Usman, 30, for disciplining a student.

Usman suffered severe injuries and initially received treatment at a local hospital before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo. She tragically passed away on June 25, 2026. Police operatives visited the scene and the deceased's residence to gather evidence, and arrangements are being made for a medical examination and autopsy.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on 25th June, 2026.

The suspects, including Ishaka and the two women, fled the scene before the police arrived. Efforts are underway to apprehend them, after which the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
