Police recover illegal gun, ammunition from Akwa Ibom residence

Police in Nigeria's Akwa Ibom State have recovered an illegal firearm and ammunition from a local resident's home following an intelligence-led operation. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command disclosed that officers searched the residence of Edet George in Ikot Akpan Afaha Village, Uyo Local Government Area, after receiving reports of his habitual harassment of the community with a weapon.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded another significant operational success with the recovery of an illegally possessed firearm and live ammunition during an intelligence-led operation aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal arms and enhancing public safety across the state.

The search yielded a single-barrel gun and eight rounds of live cartridges. According to a statement from the command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, George's wife corroborated these reports, stating that her husband frequently used the firearm to intimidate not only community members but also his own family.

A thorough search of the premises led to the recovery of one single-barrel gun and eight rounds of live cartridges concealed within the residence.

The recovered items are now in police custody. Preliminary investigations are underway to trace the origin of the weapon, verify its legality, and determine if it has been involved in any criminal activities. The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reiterated the command's commitment to combating illegal firearms and ensuring justice for those who use them to terrorize citizens.

During the course of the investigation, the suspect’s wife (name withheld), made a statement confirming that the suspect frequently used the firearm to intimidate and threaten not only members of the community but also his own family, including herself and their children.
