Police rescue two abandoned babies in Abuja

Two abandoned babies were rescued in separate parts of Abuja on the same day, after residents heard them crying and alerted police.

In Kurudu, a resident identified as Innocent heard a baby crying near Obodo Street at about 5:30 p.m. on September 2, 2026. He found a baby boy wrapped in cloth and left inside a carton, then reported the discovery at Kurudu Police Station. Officers from the division and its Juveniles and Women Care Department took the child to a nearby hospital, where he was assessed and listed in stable condition.

Later that evening in Gwagwalada, a resident identified as Ibrahim heard a baby girl crying outside his gate at about 9:40 p.m. He and other community members rescued her and reported the incident to police. Officers took the girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination, and she remained under care before transfer to Social Welfare Development.

Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh said officers were working to establish how both babies were abandoned and locate their mothers or other relatives. She praised Innocent, Ibrahim and other residents for acting quickly, and asked anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or the command’s public relations officer.
