Police Say Methamphetamine Was Hidden in a McMuffin During Broome Traffic Stop

Broome police say they found a small ziplock bag of suspected methamphetamine inside a McDonald’s McMuffin during a traffic stop at Cable Beach.

Footage released by police shows officers searching a fast-food bag containing items from several outlets before taking out the breakfast sandwich. When they pulled it apart, they allegedly found a bag filled with white powder.

The driver, a 39-year-old man from Derby who police said was not previously known to them, was arrested on Aug. 20 and charged with possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply.

Detective Senior Sergeant Trisha Stjepic said people were using increasingly careful methods to conceal drugs. She said hiding substances in a fast-food item was a first for officers, although hiding drugs inside vehicles had become more common. Both the driver and a second man are due to appear in court later this month.

The separate case involved a 21-year-old man whom police allege possessed cannabis, methamphetamine and a knife at a fast-food outlet on Aug. 29. Officers allege he had travelled 2,080 kilometres from Perth intending to sell and supply prohibited drugs in the Broome area. Police said he ran from officers before his arrest. Stjepic said Broome police had focused on disrupting the local methamphetamine trade over the past year.
