Police unveil violent crime response unit in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has officially launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) aimed at bolstering the fight against escalating violent crimes within the state. The inauguration ceremony in Lokoja marked the operational commencement of this specialized tactical unit.

It is with a deep sense of duty and commitment to the safety of lives and property that I warmly welcome you all to this historic occasion marking the official inauguration and operational launch.

State Police Commissioner Bello Kankarofi stated that the VCRU's establishment is in direct response to the operational directives of the Inspector General of Police, IG Olatunji Disu. He emphasized that the unit embodies a reform-driven policing framework designed to enhance internal security through proactive measures, intelligence-led operations, and swift responses to violent incidents.

At this point, I wish to respectfully acknowledge the visionary leadership and operational directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, whose reform-driven policing framework provided the basis for the establishment of this specialised tactical unit across Commands of the Federation.

Kankarofi acknowledged the complex and evolving security challenges, including armed banditry, kidnapping, and highway attacks, which necessitate a responsive and coordinated operational structure. The VCRU is mandated to swiftly intervene in violent incidents, conduct intelligence-gathering operations, strengthen surveillance, support high-risk area operations, and improve inter-agency collaboration.

The security environment in recent times has continued to present evolving and complex challenges, particularly armed banditry, kidnapping, highway attacks, and other violent crimes. These threats require a responsive, intelligence-driven, and coordinated operational structure capable of swift intervention.

The Kogi State Government played a crucial role by renovating and fully furnishing a facility specifically to accommodate the VCRU's operational needs. This investment underscores the government's commitment to enhancing public safety and supporting security agencies. The officers selected for the VCRU have undergone rigorous screening and professional assessment to ensure their suitability for the demanding tasks ahead.
