Policewoman, pedestrian die in Gombe highway crash

Tragedy struck Gombe State on Wednesday when a DAF truck lost control and plowed into a busy section of the Gombe-Yola Federal Highway, claiming the lives of a Woman Police Constable and an unidentified male pedestrian. The devastating incident, which occurred around 11:30 am along the New Mile 3 axis, also left two other individuals, including the truck driver, with injuries requiring medical attention.

As a result of the accident, two persons, namely Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina attached to Communications department, Gombe State Command, and one unidentified male pedestrian, regrettably lost their lives, while two other persons, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

According to preliminary investigations by both the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the horrific crash was attributed to a combination of brake failure and a severe route violation by the truck driver. Eyewitness accounts and official reports indicate the driver, while attempting to enter a filling station through a one-way access, experienced a catastrophic brake failure, leading to the loss of control and the subsequent collision with motorcycles, pedestrians, and nearby shops.

The Commissioner of Police warns motorists against all forms of traffic violations and urges drivers to ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations and proper maintenance of their vehicles to prevent avoidable road accidents.

In the wake of this somber event, the Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, CP Umar Chuso, issued a stern warning to all motorists. He emphasized the critical importance of adhering to traffic regulations and ensuring the proper maintenance of vehicles to prevent such avoidable road accidents. The FRSC Sector Commander in Gombe State, Samson Kaura, echoed these sentiments, urging drivers to exercise greater discipline and to always take the correct routes to ensure the safety of themselves and the public. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from negligence and disregard for traffic laws on our roads.

It was caused by a trailer who took fuel at Rano filling station. Instead of taking the right route, he did route violation. He lost control. Two casualty, one male and one female. The two had injuries.
