Polish PM Warns of Russian Escalation, Pledges Support for Estonia

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a stark warning regarding Russia's intentions, stating that Moscow is preparing for a serious escalation in Ukraine and the wider region over the critical next seven to eight months.

Speaking at a youth festival in Olsztyn, Tusk emphasized the principle of collective defense within NATO, asserting that Poland must be at the forefront of any response if Russia were to attack Estonia. "If Russia decided to attack Estonia, we Poles would be unimaginative if we said 'let's not react for the sake of caution'. We must be at the forefront of those who mobilize NATO for an immediate and strong response, because otherwise we would be next," Tusk declared.

He indicated that the Polish government maintains constant contact with allied intelligence services and is aware of Russia's preparations. Tusk noted that intelligence suggests Russia is gearing up for heightened tensions, with the upcoming autumn and winter being crucial periods. He pointed to signs such as mobilization preparations as indicators of Russia's intentions, dismissing any notion that such moves would be for peacekeeping operations.

Tusk underscored Poland's commitment to ensuring NATO remains a credible deterrent. While stating he is not seeking conflict and is working to protect Poland from any disputes with its neighbors, he identified Russia as an aggressor towards NATO countries. "We must all be as one fist," he urged, highlighting the need for unified action against potential threats.
