Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival Closes with Donny McCaslin Performance and Late-Night Jam Session

The Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival continued its exploration of music and artistry with its second day, marked by a captivating concert from the "Speaking in Tongues" project, featuring pianist Rachel Eckroth and drummer John Hadfield. Held in the garden of Hotel Grand, the event showcased a duo whose music is built on improvisation, leaving ample space for spontaneous musical expression.

Earlier in the day, attendees participated in two masterclasses. The first, "Body, Mind, and Spirit in the Life of a Freelance Musician," hosted saxophonist Donny McCaslin, pianist and vocalist Alejandra Sofia, and festival artistic director Thana Alexa. They delved into the often-overlooked aspects of a music career, discussing the instability of freelance work, maintaining creative energy, and preventing burnout.

The second workshop, led by Jamey Haddad, focused on "Demystifying and Exploring the Geometry of the Playing Field of Time." Haddad, a seasoned percussionist for Paul Simon and a member of the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame, introduced participants to concepts of metric and non-metric time, drawing parallels with South Indian rhythmic scales and their application in Western music. This session offered a fresh perspective on pulse, structure, and temporal relationships in musical improvisation and composition.

The day concluded with an extended jam session where festival participants applied the concepts from Haddad's "Playing Field of Time" workshop, demonstrating a direct engagement with the day's learning. The festival's final day promises further exploration with workshops on creative roots, polyrhythms, and musical storytelling, before closing with Donny McCaslin's performance and a DJ set.
