Pope Leo XIV meets Argentine Archbishop ahead of November visit

Pope Leo XIV is set to visit Argentina from November 8 to 11, a trip that has prompted significant preparations and meetings. As part of these arrangements, Archbishop Jorge Eduardo Scheinig of the Archdiocese of Mercedes-Luján, who is on the national commission organizing the pontiff's visit, met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.

Before the official audience, Archbishop Scheinig participated in a moment of prayer and celebrated the Eucharist at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, visiting the tomb of the late Pope Francis. He was accompanied by Father Sebastián Terráneo, and during the ceremony, he entrusted the intentions of various communities, priests, deacons, religious, and seminarians from the local ecclesiastical jurisdiction.

In a recorded message to the faithful of his archdiocese, Scheinig emphasized the institutional and spiritual significance of his mission to the Holy See, highlighting that the visit aims to strengthen the communion between the local church and St. Peter's Basilica. The meeting with Pope Leo XIV had been scheduled since April, prior to the confirmation of the pontiff's visit to Argentina, with the initial purpose of discussing diocesan life.

The meeting gained particular importance following the confirmation of the Pope's South American tour. Pope Leo XIV will arrive in Argentina from Uruguay on Sunday, November 8, and depart on Wednesday, November 11, before continuing his tour to Peru. His itinerary in Argentina includes visits to Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján. Authorities have confirmed plans for three major masses, one in each city. The government is actively coordinating the reception, with discussions including the possibility of declaring a public holiday for a large religious celebration during the visit. A coordination meeting was held at Casa Rosada, involving Karina Milei, Secretary of the Presidency, and other government officials, alongside members of the "National Commission for the Preparation of the Visit."
