Popular Mont Blanc Route Inaccessible Due to Melting Glacier

The primary Italian route for ascending Mont Blanc is currently impassable, forcing guides to halt expeditions. Alex Campedelli, president of the Courmayeur guides' association, explained that June's heatwaves have rapidly destabilized the glacier, creating excessive crevasses and making navigation treacherous. "We can no longer take clients," Campedelli stated, noting the decision to suspend use of the route was made last week. He emphasized that authorities have not issued a formal ban and alternative routes are still available for climbing Mont Blanc from the Italian side.

This closure highlights the increasing impact of abnormal temperatures on Alpine environments. The rapid melting of glaciers raises the risk of landslides and rockfalls. On the French side of Mont Blanc, climbs are still proceeding, according to Ricardo Mora of the Saint-Gervais-les-Bains guides' organization. However, Mora cautioned that persistently high temperatures could eventually force similar decisions to those made in 2022, when ascents were suspended mid-July due to falling rocks.

Similar concerns are affecting other iconic peaks. In Switzerland, guides have been advising against climbing the Matterhorn via its classic Hörnli ridge route since last Thursday due to similar risks. The unstable conditions underscore the growing challenges faced by mountaineers and guides in the Alps as climate change accelerates glacier melt.
