Recognizing warning signs early and acting without hesitation can make the difference between life and death for someone experiencing suicidal thoughts, psychiatrist Francis Báez said.

Báez explained that people in this situation may not reject help because they distrust professionals. Instead, they may feel that nothing can pull them out of the state they are in. “A person who has suicidal thoughts does not seek help because they do not believe in professionals, but because they believe that nothing can help them or get them out of where they are,” she said.

The psychiatrist urged families to respond quickly and seek specialized support. That support can include psychiatric treatment to help regulate the brain chemicals involved, along with emotional and spiritual accompaniment.
