Power-grid sabotage suspect may have fled by bicycle

The search for a 48-year-old man suspected of involvement in attempted attacks on Germany’s power supply has expanded to include a bicycle.

Police in Brandenburg said they were looking for a black Trenoli Tazio Sportivo M with a 56-centimeter frame. A new appeal included a photograph of the bicycle as investigators considered the possibility that the suspect fled on it.

Police launched a major operation near Hambach Forest. The suspect had not been found when a special operations unit stormed a truck near the Hambach open-cast mine in Niederzier. The vehicle appeared to have been converted into a motorhome.

Officers had found explosives at the man’s apartment in Gevelsberg on Friday. Police previously released two photographs of him and said the attempted sabotage acts focused on North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg and, most recently, Saxony. All three states still mine and burn lignite for electricity.
