Powerful earthquake in Indonesia triggers tsunami warning

A strong magnitude 7.7 earthquake has hit eastern Indonesia, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced. The tremor was registered at 23:58 Danish time, with its epicenter located 68 kilometers northwest of Ende on the Indonesian island of Flores. The quake had a recorded depth of 10 kilometers.

Following the initial earthquake, two powerful aftershocks, measuring 5.6 and 5.9 in magnitude, were recorded in the same region, according to news agency AFP. These subsequent tremors added to the seismic activity in the area.

In response to the earthquake, Indonesia's geological agency (BMKG) issued a warning for the risk of a tsunami. The warning indicates potential waves of up to three meters along the northern coasts of Flores Island and the southern coasts of Sulawesi Island. As of early Saturday morning, there were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries related to the earthquake.

Indonesia is situated in a seismically active zone in the Pacific known as the "Ring of Fire," a region characterized by frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to the movement of tectonic plates.
