PPP Leader Claims Hotline with US Republicans, Cites Alliance Concerns

Returning from an 8-day trip to the United States, People Power Party interim leader Jang Dong-hyuk announced the establishment of a crucial 'hotline' with prominent figures in the US Republican Party. Jang asserted that this initiative aims to build a foundation of trust to bolster the South Korea-US alliance, which he believes is being undermined by what he termed 'diplomatic failures' of the current South Korean administration.

While Jang remained discreet about the specific individuals he met, he emphasized that his visit was driven by a commitment to national interest and strategic party diplomacy. He reported engaging with key figures in the White House and the US State Department, opening channels for communication on pressing economic matters, including trade negotiations. Jang conveyed that the US is keenly interested in South Korea playing a role commensurate with its economic and international standing, particularly in light of the evolving geopolitical landscape due to the conflict in Iran.

Jang also addressed concerns regarding recent statements attributed to the South Korean President concerning Israel, noting that US officials expressed curiosity about the authenticity and implications of these remarks. He observed a unified stance among the US administration and congressional members he met: a serious view of North Korea's nuclear ambitions and missile tests, with no support for appeasement policies toward Pyongyang.

Jin Jong-oh, who has publicly supported former party leader Han Dong-hoon, indicating internal party dynamics are also a focus. This trip underscores the PPP's effort to solidify international ties and position itself as a key player in South Korea's foreign policy discourse.
