Pregnant Taipei Candidate Registers for Re-Election as Party Allies Rally Behind Her

Huang Shu-chun registered her bid for another term as a New Taipei City councillor while pregnant, arriving at the city election commission with support from Democratic Progressive Party colleagues.

Deputy secretary-general Ho Po-wen, legislator Lin Chu-yin and New Taipei councillor Li Yu-hsiang joined Huang for a campaign motorcade before the registration. Huang's husband accompanied her as she completed the process. Li plans to register on Sept. 3.

Ho said Huang and Li had previously served as capable directors at his constituency office. He said their decision to begin the day's motorcade there represented a commitment to the principles of grassroots service. He also called for DPP New Taipei mayoral candidate Su Chiao-hui to win by a wide margin and for all the party's nominated council candidates to succeed.

Lin described Huang as a Banqiao mother who was about to become a mother again and said she supported her re-election. She called Li, her junior at Soochow University, energetic and capable. Lin also warned that candidates with good reputations could face a “head-fall defeat” when seeking re-election, making it important to secure their support.

Li said the DPP had held only his council seat across the Wutai, Taishan and Linkou areas over the past three years. He said he had established full-service offices in all three areas and wanted to continue serving local residents. Huang said encouragement from people along the route moved her and gave her strength to continue working for local government and seek another chance to serve.
