Premier League Clubs Smash Summer Transfer Spending Record

England’s top-flight clubs have broken their own summer transfer spending record for the second season in a row, pushing the window’s gross total to £3.198 billion.

Manchester City’s reported £65 million purchase of Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye took the overall figure beyond last summer’s record, when Premier League spending first passed £3 billion. Five years ago, the combined total stood at £1.13 billion, highlighting the scale of the latest surge.

Three players alone accounted for £333 million. Manchester City paid £116 million for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, and Tottenham agreed a deal for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle that could reach £100 million. Liverpool also agreed to pay Paris Saint-Germain an initial £107 million for France forward Bradley Barcola, with the fee potentially rising to £123 million.

Anderson, Rogers and Barcola now rank among the 11 most expensive signings ever. Premier League buying power also showed in comparisons with European rivals: only Yan Diomande’s move from Leipzig to Real Madrid and Anthony Gordon’s transfer from Newcastle to Barcelona exceeded £60 million outside England’s top flight. Newly promoted Ipswich Town spent more on squad strengthening than Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus.

Spending continued into the final hours. Aston Villa made Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye its 11th signing for £47 million, while Newcastle paid Lille £51.4 million for forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Around 38% of deals involved transfers between Premier League clubs, up from 30% last summer. Chelsea topped the spending table under new manager Xabi Alonso, followed by Manchester City and Tottenham, while promoted Ipswich, Coventry and Hull spent more than £400 million combined.
