Premier League Referee Anthony Taylor Retires, Citing Pressure and Criticism

Veteran Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from a 20-year career in officiating. The 48-year-old English referee stated that the immense pressure and relentless scrutiny associated with elite-level refereeing led to his decision to step down.

Taylor officiated a total of 831 matches during his career, with his final game being the 2026 World Cup qualifier between Spain and Portugal on July 7th. He began his professional refereeing journey in 2006 and was promoted to the Premier League in 2010, where he oversaw 432 matches. Internationally, he served as a FIFA referee for 14 years, officiating 163 international matches and participating in major tournaments like the 2022 Qatar World Cup and the North American World Cup.

One of Taylor's most recognized moments came during the Euro 2020 group stage match between Denmark and Finland, where he immediately halted play after Christian Eriksen collapsed due to cardiac arrest, allowing for prompt medical intervention. However, his career also saw controversy, including an incident after the 2022-2023 UEFA Europa League final where AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho verbally abused him. Taylor and his family also faced abuse from angry AS Roma fans at Budapest Airport upon their return.

Taylor also has a notable history with South Korean football. During the 2022 Qatar World Cup group stage match between South Korea and Ghana, he controversially ended the game just before South Korea could take a corner kick. He issued a red card to then-South Korea coach Paulo Bento for his strong protests.
