President Abinader inaugurates roads, school, and training center in southern Dominican Republic

President Luis Abinader inaugurated multiple infrastructure projects over the weekend in the Dominican Republic's southern provinces of Independencia and Barahona, according to the Presidency. The initiatives span road construction, educational facilities, and technical training.

In Independencia province, Abinader delivered the "Puente Mixto sobre el Río Penitente" in Boca de Cachón, a 47.80-meter mixed-use bridge designed to improve connectivity and prevent traffic disruptions caused by river flooding. This structure benefits over 11,750 residents by facilitating access to health, education, and commercial services. Additionally, four kilometers of paved streets, sidewalks, and curbs were completed in Tierra Nueva, Boca de Cachón.

Abinader also inaugurated the roof structure at the Leonor Novas Volquez School in Jimaní, which will serve more than 1,500 students for academic, sports, and cultural activities. He explained that the school roof program originated from a student request made in 2021.

In Barahona, the president officially opened the rehabilitated Cabral-Polo highway, a 20.6-kilometer stretch benefiting approximately 27,000 people. This road connects inland communities with the coast and is part of a larger corridor project. The rehabilitation included drainage and slope stabilization work, improving transportation for students, farmers, and workers. The Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Estrella, noted that these projects address vulnerable points and remote communities.

Furthermore, Abinader inaugurated the Guarocuya Technical Professional Training School, part of the Institute of Professional Technical Training (Infotep), located in Barahona. This hotel-school aims to train residents in hospitality, gastronomy, and tourism services, catering to the growing demand in Pedernales, Barahona, and other southern regions. The facility includes training areas and will function as a practical learning environment.
