President arrives in Thakurgaon for two-day visit

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir arrived in Thakurgaon on Sunday for a two-day visit, his first tour of his home district since assuming office.

A helicopter carrying the president landed at Thakurgaon Mohammad Ali Stadium at 1 p.m. Local officials and Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders welcomed him at the helipad, including Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam, Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Huq and district BNP leaders Mirza Faisal Amin and Paigam Ali.

A Bangladesh Police contingent later presented a guard of honour at Thakurgaon Circuit House. After inspecting the ceremony, Mirza Fakhrul was scheduled to visit Senua graveyard to pay respects to his parents, followed by a visit to his residence in Thakurgaon town.

The first day’s programme also includes a civic reception at Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School playground and an evening meeting with local leaders and dignitaries. On Monday, the president is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University.
