President Lee Departs for G7 Summit, Potential Trump Meeting Eyed

President Lee Jae-myung embarked on a significant European diplomatic tour on June 9, departing from Seoul Air Base for Brussels, Belgium. The President's itinerary spans ten days, from June 9 to June 18, encompassing visits to Belgium, Italy, the Vatican, and France. This extensive tour aims to broaden the nation's diplomatic engagement in Europe and solidify its position as a responsible global power.

During his stay in Belgium, President Lee will meet with Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and King Philippe. He is also scheduled to hold talks with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, underscoring the importance of strengthening ties with the European Union.

The President's visit to Italy includes a state visit at the invitation of President Sergio Mattarella and meetings with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. A 'Korea-Italy Business Round Table' is planned to foster bilateral business exchanges. Following official engagements in Rome, President Lee will travel to Florence to discuss cultural cooperation.

A significant part of the tour involves a visit to the Vatican on June 14-15. President Lee will attend a special Mass for Peace and Solidarity and meet with Pope Francis and Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. This engagement aims to express the nation's commitment to global peace and solidarity and seek the Vatican's support.

The final leg of the tour will see President Lee attend the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on June 16-17. His participation for the second consecutive year highlights the nation's role as a "Global Responsible Power" within the G7+ framework. Attention is also focused on the possibility of a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, who is also attending the summit.
