President’s London tour sets tongues wagging

President Asif Ali Zardari’s prolonged stay in London has set off speculation in Islamabad, with the debate centering on whether the trip is only about medical checks or also carries a political purpose.

The timing has drawn particular attention because Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is also in the United Kingdom. Naqvi recently reignited the debate over creating new provinces and has continued to press for new administrative units, despite the Pakistan Peoples Party’s outright rejection of the proposal.

An official video showing Naqvi meeting Zardari added to the discussion. The meeting has raised questions about where the president stands on an issue that Naqvi himself pushed into the spotlight through attacks on the existing governance system and a call for a “reset.”

Some observers believe Zardari travelled to London solely for a medical check-up. Others see the extended visit as a political move intended to put pressure on the government. Naqvi has since doubled down on his demand for new administrative units, including in remarks at a National Policy Dialogue on the devolution of powers and good governance.
